Ahimsaka received his education at the renowned Taxila University, an ancient center of learning.
At Taxila, Ahimsaka excelled as a scholar and earned the admiration of his teacher. However, his success sparked envy among his peers, who conspired to poison the teacher’s mind with false allegations. Blinded by anger, the teacher plotted a cruel revenge.
The Dark Turn: The Guru Dakshina
The teacher demanded an impossible Guru Dakshina (parting gift): 1000 human fingers. He hoped Ahimsaka would be killed in the process. Determined to fulfill his teacher’s demand, Ahimsaka descended into darkness. He took to the Jalini Forest, where he began ambushing travelers, collecting fingers from his victims, and wearing them as a gruesome necklace. Thus, he became Angulimala, meaning “the garland of fingers.”
The terror of Angulimala spread far and wide. Entire villages were abandoned, and the forest became synonymous with fear.
Buddha’s Compassion Saves Angulimala
The Turning Point
One day, Buddha, residing at the Jetavana Monastery in Sravasti, decided to end the suffering caused by Angulimala. With infinite compassion, the Buddha walked alone into the dreaded Jalini Forest, despite warnings from villagers.
That very morning, Angulimala resolved to kill the first person he encountered to complete his 1000th finger. To his shock, the person walking toward him was his own mother. Torn between love and his dark resolve, Angulimala prepared to strike. However, before he could harm his mother, Buddha appeared.
Seeing the monk, Angulimala decided to target him instead. He chased after the Buddha, but no matter how fast he ran, the Buddha seemed to remain ahead. Exhausted, Angulimala finally shouted:
“Stop, ascetic! Stop!”
The Buddha calmly replied:
“I have stopped, Angulimala. It is you who must stop.”
Perplexed, Angulimala asked for an explanation. The Buddha’s words pierced through his heart:
“I have stopped forever, for I harm no living being. But you, Angulimala, have not stopped your harmful ways.”
Realizing the truth and compassion in Buddha’s words, Angulimala dropped his weapons and surrendered. He renounced his past, took refuge in the Buddha, and became a devoted monk.
Angulimala’s Redemption and Enlightenment
The Struggles of a Reformed Life
Though Angulimala became a monk, his past haunted him. Many villagers refused to forgive him, and he often endured hostility during his alms rounds. However, Angulimala remained steadfast in his practice, harboring no anger toward those who rejected him.
The Patron Saint of Expecting Mothers
One day, Angulimala witnessed a woman struggling to give birth. Moved by compassion, he sought guidance from Buddha. Following Buddha’s advice, Angulimala recited these words of truth:
“Since my rebirth in the Noble Dhamma, I have not intentionally harmed any living being. By this truth, may you and your child be safe and at peace.”
The woman delivered her child safely, and Angulimala became revered as the patron saint for expecting mothers. To this day, the Angulimala Paritta is recited in Buddhist cultures to bless mothers and their unborn children.
Angulimala’s Final Days and Enlightenment
Angulimala continued his meditation practice in solitude and eventually attained Arahantship, the state of complete liberation. However, some villagers, unable to forgive his past, attacked him during his alms round. Gravely injured, he returned to Jetavana Monastery, where he was comforted by the Buddha.
With his final breath, Angulimala recited:
“Buddham Saranam Gacchami; Dhammam Saranam Gacchami.”
In this moment, he attained Nibbana (final liberation). The Angulimala Stupa in Sravasti marks the site of his cremation and serves as a reminder of the power of compassion and redemption.
